4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons instant yeast
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
2 cups apple pie filling
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
4 ounces cream cheese, softened (optional)
1 cup powdered sugar (optional)
1 tablespoon milk (optional)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. In a small saucepan, warm the milk and melted butter until just warm. Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients, followed by the eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
While the dough is rising, mix the apple pie filling with cinnamon and nutmeg until well combined.
After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 16×24 inches). Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and arrange them in a greased baking dish, cut side up. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly.
While the rolls are cooling, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, then milk and vanilla, mixing until well combined.
Drizzle the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls or serve it on the side.
