Ingredients
Scale
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup powdered sugar
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
½ cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and powdered sugar. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly. Stir in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until a dough forms.
Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, creating an even layer. Set aside the remaining dough for the topping.
Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove and let cool while you prepare the apple filling.
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are well coated.
Pour the apple mixture over the baked crust, spreading it evenly. Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apples.
Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the pan.
Once cooled, drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the bars and allow it to set before cutting into squares.
