Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and powdered sugar. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly. Stir in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until a dough forms.
  • Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, creating an even layer. Set aside the remaining dough for the topping.
  • Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove and let cool while you prepare the apple filling.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are well coated.
  • Pour the apple mixture over the baked crust, spreading it evenly. Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apples.
  • Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the pan.
  • Once cooled, drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the bars and allow it to set before cutting into squares.
