Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
  • Optional: Garlic powder or onion powder
  • Optional: Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: Dried oregano or rosemary
  • Special Garnishes: Fresh parsley or chives, Chili flakes

  • Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Stir in sugar, salt, and gradually add flour. Mix with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 8 pieces. Roll each into a 20-inch long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
  • In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a gentle boil. Add baking soda and bubble. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then transfer to a lined baking sheet.
  • Brush pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Optional: Add garlic powder or herbs.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Notes

A delightful twist on the classic pretzel that bursts with flavor and crunch. Perfect for gatherings, movie nights, or when snack cravings hit hard.
