Ingredients
Scale
2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup baking soda
1 large egg, beaten
Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Optional: Garlic powder or onion powder
Optional: Parmesan cheese
Optional: Dried oregano or rosemary
Special Garnishes: Fresh parsley or chives, Chili flakes
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
Stir in sugar, salt, and gradually add flour. Mix with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 8 pieces. Roll each into a 20-inch long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a gentle boil. Add baking soda and bubble. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then transfer to a lined baking sheet.
Brush pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Optional: Add garlic powder or herbs.
Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
