  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh basil for garnish
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes, spinach or kale, zucchini or carrots
  • Special garnishes: Fresh parsley, additional heavy cream

  • Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, beaten egg, 2 cloves minced garlic, and Italian seasoning. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove the meatballs and set aside.
  • Add chopped onion and remaining garlic to the pot, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  • Pour in the canned tomatoes and broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits.
  • Return the meatballs to the pot, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and continue to cook for another 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil and parsley.
