1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound Italian sausage
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 beaten egg
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium onion, chopped
14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 cup heavy cream
Fresh basil for garnish
Optional: Red pepper flakes, spinach or kale, zucchini or carrots
Special garnishes: Fresh parsley, additional heavy cream
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, beaten egg, 2 cloves minced garlic, and Italian seasoning. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove the meatballs and set aside.
Add chopped onion and remaining garlic to the pot, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
Pour in the canned tomatoes and broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits.
Return the meatballs to the pot, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Stir in the heavy cream and continue to cook for another 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning as needed.
Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil and parsley.
