1 lb ground beef
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup beef broth
1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
4 hamburger buns
4 slices Swiss cheese
Instructions
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are deep brown and caramelized.
Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic. Stir for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Push the onions to one side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Brown the beef, breaking it up with a spoon until no longer pink.
Stir the beef and onions together in the skillet, then add Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, optional brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes or until the liquid is slightly reduced.
While the beef mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place your hamburger buns on a baking sheet, cut side up, and toast them lightly for about 5 minutes.
Once toasted, remove the buns from the oven. Fill each bun with the beef mixture, then top with a slice of Swiss cheese.
Return the assembled buns to the oven and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
