Ingredients
Scale
1 box of German chocolate cake mix
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
3 large eggs
1 can (14 oz) of sweetened condensed milk
1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)
1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Extra pecans or coconut (for garnish)
Chocolate shavings (for garnish)
Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the German chocolate cake mix, water, oil, and eggs. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well blended.
Pour the batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool for at least 20 minutes.
Once the cake is cool, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake, about an inch apart.
Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, ensuring it fills the holes you created.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Stir continuously until thickened. Remove it from the heat and stir in the coconut and pecans.
Once the frosting has cooled slightly, spread it generously over the cake, making sure to cover the entire surface.
Allow the cake to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
