  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, diced
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Extra sugar for sprinkling on top

  • Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl. Add cubed butter and work it into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water until combined, form into two disks, wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a bowl, combine apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  • Roll out one disk of dough into a circle and place it into a 9-inch pie pan.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot with pieces of butter. Roll out the second disk and cover the filling.
  • Brush the top crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes.
