  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup of whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup of mixed dried fruit
  • 1/4 cup of orange zest
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons of milk for glaze

  • Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until blended.
  • In another bowl, mix melted butter, activated yeast mixture, and eggs. Whisk until smooth.
  • Pour wet ingredients into dry and mix until it forms a shaggy dough. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  • Knead in desired dried fruits and zest until evenly distributed.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise until it doubles in size (about 1 hour).
  • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a bun and place them on a greased baking tray close together.
  • Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes until fluffy.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush buns with melted butter and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Mix powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of milk to create a glaze, and drizzle over warm buns.
