Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup of milk
  • 1/3 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 oz of cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the milk (warm it slightly), 1 tablespoon of sugar, and the yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it’s foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, melted butter, egg, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Stir in the foamy yeast mixture, followed by the flour, baking powder, and salt until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for an hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter until it’s a spreadable paste.
  • Once your dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Generously spread the cinnamon filling over the rolled dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Start from one edge and carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the seam to seal.
  • Using a sharp knife or dental floss, slice the log into about 12 equal pieces. Place them in a greased baking pan.
  • Cover the pan with the towel again and allow them to rise for another 30 minutes while you preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until they’re slightly golden brown.
  • In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until fluffy.
  • Once the rolls are out of the oven and slightly cool, slather that luscious cream cheese frosting on top.
