Create tasty mini heart apple pies for Valentines Day Perfect for sharing with loved ones or enjoying a sweet treat yourself
Ingredients
Scale
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of sugar
1 cup of unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
6–8 tablespoons of ice water
4 medium apples, peeled and sliced
½ cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1 egg (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract (optional)
Nuts, like walnuts or pecans (optional)
Powdered sugar (for garnish)
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving)
Instructions
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the chilled butter, and using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough holds together but isn't sticky.
Gather the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least an hour.
Mix your sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a bowl. Allow the flavors to marry for about 20 minutes.
Once chilled, take the dough out and divide it in half. Roll out one half to about ¼ inch thick. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
Place a heart-shaped cutout on a lined baking sheet. Add a spoonful of the apple filling and top it with another heart cutout. Seal the edges by crimping with a fork or your fingers. Cut a small slit on the top to let steam escape.
Whisk the egg and brush it over the tops of each pie.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the pies for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the pies cool down for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top or serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
