Description

Delicious grilled sweet onion rings paired with a smoky dipping sauce, perfect for summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla, cut into 1/2-inch thick rings)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • For the Smoky Dipping Sauce:
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your grill to medium-high heat, preparing for those beautifully caramelized rings. While the grill heats up, slice your sweet onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Spread the rings out on a tray or plate, ready for breading.
  2. Combine the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper in a bowl. In another bowl, pour in the buttermilk.
  3. Dunk each onion ring into the buttermilk, then coat thoroughly with the flour mixture.
  4. Brush your grill grates with olive oil to prevent sticking, then place the breaded onion rings on the grill, cooking for about 4-5 minutes on each side.
  5. Remove the onion rings from the grill once golden brown and arrange them on a serving platter.
  6. Serve alongside the Smoky Dipping Sauce.

Notes

Serve warm and crispy, and feel free to garnish with fresh parsley for added flair.
